There is something especially lovely about the last stretch of summer. The days are still long enough for lingering outside after dinner, gardens are overflowing with their final abundance, and the air seems to carry a gentle reminder that another season is quietly waiting just around the corner. Before autumn’s crisp mornings arrive, there is a wonderful opportunity to slow down and soak in all the simple gifts that summer offers.
Children have a beautiful way of noticing the little things that adults sometimes rush past, a butterfly drifting through the garden, a patch of wildflowers buzzing with busy bees, the sweetness of a perfectly ripe blackberry, or the warmth of sunshine on bare feet. Perhaps one of the greatest joys of family life is learning to notice those things alongside them.
Summer has a way of inviting us to live a little more slowly. Meals linger a little longer on the porch. Evening walks stretch into conversations. Books are read beneath shady trees. Ordinary days somehow feel sprinkled with a little extra loveliness.
Fill Your Home with the Flavors of Summer
One of the easiest ways to celebrate the season is simply by enjoying its delicious abundance.
Bring home baskets of fresh berries from the farmers market or a local berry farm. Scatter them over oatmeal, fold them into muffins, bake them into cobblers, or simply serve them with a little fresh cream. There is something wonderfully comforting about a bowl of ripe berries enjoyed together around the kitchen table.
Visit your local farmers market and let your children admire the colorful displays of tomatoes, peaches, cucumbers, herbs, flowers, and freshly baked goods. Allow them to choose one fruit or vegetable they’ve never tried before. These little traditions become treasured memories far more quickly than we realize.
Keep bouquets of cheerful summer flowers around your home whenever you can. Even a handful of wildflowers gathered during an evening walk can brighten a table and remind everyone of the beauty growing just outside your door.
Wander Through Gardens
Whenever I think of summer, I think of gardens.
My grandfather earned his degree in horticulture and always had something beautiful growing. His garden seemed almost magical to me as a child. There were flowers to admire, vegetables to discover, butterflies floating through the air, and always something new blooming with each passing week.
He also had a croquet set, and throughout the summer we would spend happy afternoons playing croquet together on the lawn. To this day, I can’t think of summer without picturing a croquet mallet resting in the grass and hearing laughter drifting through the warm afternoon air.
You don’t have to have an elaborate garden to enjoy this part of summer. Visit a local botanical garden, stroll through a neighborhood filled with blooming flowers, or simply plant a pot of lavender or herbs on your porch. Watching bees gather pollen and butterflies flutter from blossom to blossom reminds us that there is quiet beauty happening all around us.
Lavender especially feels like the fragrance of summer to me. So does chamomile, with its cheerful little flowers swaying gently in the breeze. These simple plants seem to capture the peaceful spirit of the season.
Make Time for the Water
Whether your family lives near the ocean, a lake, or a neighborhood pool, water has a special way of slowing life down.
There is something unforgettable about dipping your toes into cool water, collecting seashells along the shoreline, watching waves roll in, or simply listening to the sound of water while sitting quietly together.
If you’re fortunate enough to spend a day by the sea, take a deep breath of the salty air and linger a little longer than you planned. Some of childhood’s sweetest memories are made with sandy feet and windswept hair.
Pack a Picnic Basket
Few things feel as wonderfully summery as a picnic.
It doesn’t need to be elaborate.
A loaf of fresh bread, seasonal fruit, lemonade, sandwiches, and homemade cookies can become a feast when enjoyed beneath a shady tree.
Bring a blanket, a favorite board game, a deck of cards, or simply enjoy watching clouds drift overhead while everyone chats and laughs together.
Sometimes changing the location of an ordinary meal is all it takes to make an ordinary day feel memorable.
Gather Around the Fire for S’mores
Summer evenings seem made for gathering together.
Light a backyard fire pit if you have one, roast marshmallows, make s’mores, tell funny family stories, or simply enjoy watching the stars begin to appear overhead.
The sweetest family memories are often made not during elaborate vacations, but during simple evenings spent together without being in a hurry.
Read Stories That Feel Like Summer
Certain books seem forever tied to the season.
Whenever summer arrives, I find myself reaching for The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Its gentle adventures along the river capture everything peaceful and carefree about long summer days.
Our family also loves Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. Its tales of sailing, imagination, and outdoor adventures make it one of those stories that feels especially at home during the summer months.
And for reasons I can hardly explain, summer is always the season when I enjoy reading about the life of Beatrix Potter. Perhaps it’s because her stories are so deeply rooted in gardens, woodland paths, cottage life, and the quiet beauty of nature. They seem to pair perfectly with sunny afternoons and birdsong drifting through an open window.
Choose books that invite your family outdoors, spark the imagination, and encourage wonder. Stories have a beautiful way of becoming part of the season itself.
Notice the Little Wonders
The older I get, the more convinced I become that the loveliest parts of summer are often the smallest.
The hum of bees in the garden.
Butterflies floating lazily through the flowers.
Fresh peaches ripening on the counter.
The scent of lavender carried on a warm breeze.
Bare feet in the grass.
Fresh-cut watermelon.
Fireflies beginning to twinkle at dusk.
Children laughing while chasing sprinklers.
The sound of birds greeting the morning.
A basket filled with vegetables from the garden.
These moments don’t ask us to spend more or accomplish more. They simply invite us to notice.
Before Summer Slips Away
The calendar may say that summer is beginning to wind down, but there is still so much beauty waiting to be enjoyed.
Bake one more berry dessert.
Visit one more farmers market.
Read one more chapter beneath a tree.
Watch one more sunset.
Play one more game of croquet.
Pack one more picnic.
Gather flowers one more time.
Make one more batch of s’mores.
Walk through one more garden.
The sweetest seasons of family life are rarely remembered because they were extravagant. They are remembered because they were noticed.
As August gently carries us toward autumn, may we resist the temptation to rush ahead to the next season. Instead, may we delight in the gifts that are still right before us, the warmth of the sun, the abundance of the garden, the laughter of our children, and the quiet, ordinary beauty that makes summer such a treasured time of year.
After all, these simple summer days are becoming tomorrow’s cherished memories!
