There is something wonderfully gentle about August. The days are still warm, but the light begins to soften ever so slightly. Gardens are overflowing, farmers markets are filled with baskets of late-summer produce, and ripe peaches seem to appear everywhere you look. The pace of summer often feels a little quieter by now. We’ve settled into familiar rhythms, we’ve made wonderful memories together, and before the busy days of autumn arrive, August offers one last invitation to slow down and savor the simple joys that make family life so beautiful.
For our family, August is the perfect month for homemade desserts shared around the table, leisurely afternoons with picture books, and making the most of these golden summer days. There is something comforting about gathering fresh peaches, baking something delicious together, and then curling up with a stack of favorite stories while the scent of cinnamon and fruit fills the house.
Today I’m sharing one of our favorite simple August desserts along with a handful of picture books that seem especially lovely this time of year.
A Simple & Wholesome Peach Crisp
If you’re able to visit a local farmers market, August is one of the very best times to bring home beautiful, ripe peaches. If not, simply choose the ripest peaches you can find at your grocery store. Either way, this peach crisp is simple to make, uses wholesome ingredients, and is just sweet enough to let the fruit shine.
Ingredients
Peach Filling:
- 6–8 ripe peaches, peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch or arrowroot starch
Crisp Topping:
- 1 cup old-fashioned oats
- ¾ cup whole wheat flour (or half whole wheat, half all-purpose)
- ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- pinch of sea salt
- ¼ cup melted butter or coconut oil
- ¼ cup maple syrup
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Toss the sliced peaches with the maple syrup, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, and cornstarch.
- Spread the peaches into a lightly greased baking dish.
- In another bowl, stir together the oats, flour, nuts, cinnamon, and salt.
- Add the melted butter and maple syrup, stirring until crumbly.
- Sprinkle evenly over the peaches.
- Bake for about 35–40 minutes until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is lightly golden.
Serve warm on its own or with a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a special summer treat.
One of my favorite parts of this recipe is how easily children can help. Little hands can stir the topping, wash peaches, sprinkle cinnamon, or carefully layer everything into the baking dish. Sometimes those moments spent cooking together become the sweetest memories of all.
Our Favorite Picture Books for August
August always feels like a month for lingering stories. These are books that celebrate nature, imagination, family, wonder, and the beauty of ordinary days. They’re the kinds of stories that invite everyone to slow down for just a little while.
-Miss Maple’s Seeds by Eliza Wheeler
This beautifully illustrated story follows the gentle Miss Maple, who gathers forgotten seeds, cares for them through the winter, and helps them find places where they can grow. It is a quiet story about hope, nurturing, and new beginnings wrapped in enchanting artwork. Even though autumn is approaching, it reminds us that every season has its own beautiful work to do.
-The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant
Few books capture family togetherness quite like this classic. As relatives travel from far away to spend time together, the house becomes wonderfully full of laughter, conversations, shared meals, and joyful chaos. It celebrates the simple blessing of being together and always leaves us feeling grateful for family traditions and summertime visits.
-Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran, illustrated by Barbara Cooney
This timeless favorite tells the story of children who transform an ordinary patch of desert into an imaginative town built entirely from rocks, sticks, boxes, and dreams. It is a beautiful reminder that childhood doesn’t require expensive toys or elaborate entertainment. A little imagination can create entire worlds, making it a perfect August read before school routines return.
-Ocean Meets Sky by The Fan Brothers
Filled with breathtaking illustrations, this imaginative story follows a young boy on a remarkable journey across magical waters inspired by stories his grandfather once shared. It is gentle, thoughtful, and filled with wonder, encouraging children to dream, imagine, and treasure family memories.
-Flotsam by David Wiesner
This nearly wordless masterpiece invites readers to discover extraordinary surprises washed ashore inside an old camera found on the beach. Every page rewards careful observation and sparks endless conversations. Children delight in noticing new details each time they read it, making it one of those books you’ll return to again and again.
Savor the Last Sweet Days of Summer
August has a way of inviting us to notice the little things before the season changes. Fresh fruit on the counter. Children’s laughter drifting through open windows. Long evenings around the dinner table. One more chapter before bedtime. One more family walk. One more picnic. One more homemade dessert.
These ordinary moments are often the ones our children remember most. So bake the peach crisp together. Visit the farmers market if you can. Read a favorite picture book beneath a shady tree. Let the dishes wait a little longer while you enjoy another story, another slice of warm crisp, and another beautiful August afternoon.
The sweetest parts of summer are rarely the busiest, they’re often the simplest!
