Apple Days: A Sweet and Simple Family Tradition for Celebrating Apple Season

The first apples of the season often make us feel as though summer is gently beginning to turn the page.

The air may still be warm. The afternoons may still feel golden and bright. But suddenly we find ourselves thinking about baskets of apples, warm drinks, cinnamon in the kitchen, and all the little traditions that make the changing seasons feel special.

Apple season does not have to be complicated. We do not need a giant party, an elaborate outing, or a perfectly planned weekend. Sometimes all it takes is a bag of apples from the grocery store or farmers market, a warm drink, a favorite family recipe, and a few good books.

We like to think of it as an apple afternoon, a sweet and simple way to gather our family together and celebrate one of the loveliest seasons of the year.

Go Apple Picking, or Simply Bring Home a Beautiful Bag of Apples

If there is an orchard nearby, apple picking can make for a wonderful family outing. There is something especially fun about wandering through the rows, reaching up for a bright red apple, and filling a bag to bring home.

Of course, an apple orchard is not required to enjoy apple season.

A trip to the farmers market or grocery store works just as well. Let everyone choose a favorite variety. Maybe we bring home crisp Honeycrisp apples for snacking, tart Granny Smith apples for baking, or whichever apples happen to look especially beautiful that day.

Sometimes the simplest traditions are the ones that actually happen.

Make Something Delicious

An apple afternoon gives us a good excuse to fill the kitchen with some of our favorite fall flavors.

We might make a batch of apple muffins to enjoy for breakfast or an afternoon snack. Applesauce simmering on the stove makes the whole house smell wonderful, and a simple apple crisp can turn an ordinary dinner into something that feels a little more like a celebration.

There is no need to make everything at once. One apple recipe is plenty.

But if we are feeling inspired, apple season gives us so many simple possibilities:

  • Warm apple muffins
  • Homemade applesauce
  • Cinnamon apple slices
  • Apple crisp
  • Apple pancakes
  • Baked apples
  • Apple bread
  • Sliced apples with caramel dip
  • Apples and peanut butter for an easy snack

We love recipes that invite children into the kitchen, too. Little hands can help wash apples, stir batter, sprinkle cinnamon, or arrange sliced apples on a plate.

It may not always be perfectly tidy, but those little moments together are part of the tradition.

Serve a Simple Apple Snack Board

For an especially easy family treat, try putting together a little apple snack board.

Slice several kinds of apples and arrange them on a large plate or wooden board. Add a bowl of caramel dip, peanut butter, or another favorite dip. A handful of crackers, cheese, or nuts can make it feel a little more substantial.

And if we happen to have apple crisp or muffins left over from the kitchen, all the better.

Sometimes children are more excited about an ordinary snack when it is presented as something special. A few apple slices on a pretty plate can suddenly feel like an occasion.

Apple Cider for Everyone

A warm drink is a lovely way to make an apple afternoon feel special.

We can warm apple cider on the stove and add cinnamon sticks, or simply serve it in favorite mugs. For younger children, warm apple cider feels wonderfully grown-up and festive without being complicated at all.

We might gather everyone around the kitchen table after school or set up our little apple celebration in the living room with blankets and pillows.

There is no right way to do it. The goal is simply to slow down for an hour or two and enjoy being together.

Read Apple-Themed Picture Books Together

Apple season is also the perfect time to bring out a few favorite books.

There are so many wonderful stories that celebrate apples, orchards, fall, and the changing seasons. We might pile onto the couch with warm cider and read a few picture books together before dinner or before bedtime.

The books do not even have to be brand new. In fact, there is something especially lovely about returning to familiar stories each year and letting them become part of our family’s seasonal rhythm.

Children often remember the books we read together long after they have forgotten the details of the rest of the day.

Finish with Apple Crisp

If there is one thing that can make an apple afternoon feel complete, it may be a warm dish of apple crisp.

We do not need a special occasion. We do not need company coming over. We can simply put a dish of apple crisp in the oven because the apples looked good, because the season is changing, or because it is an ordinary Tuesday and our family could use a little something special.

Serve it warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and enjoy it together around the table.

We can give our children the experience of a home that celebrates small things.

A new season.

A favorite fruit.

The smell of cinnamon.

A warm drink after a busy day.

A book read aloud while everyone sits close together.

None of these things are expensive or especially grand. But they can become part of the atmosphere of family life, the little rituals that quietly say, we are together, and this day is worth enjoying.

An Apple Afternoon: A Simple Family Tradition

Perhaps that is what apple season is really about, an invitation to gather.

To slow down.

To make something simple.

To enjoy the changing seasons instead of rushing through them.

So this year, perhaps choose one afternoon and make it an Apple Afternoon. Bring home a bag of beautiful apples. Make apple muffins or a simple apple crisp. Slice a few apples and set out a favorite dip. Warm the cider. Gather some apple-themed picture books. Put a blanket on the couch and invite everyone to come sit down for a little while.

Nothing has to be perfect. The kitchen may be messy. The apples may not all be sliced evenly. Someone may spill a little cider. Someone may be more interested in the apple crisp than the books.

That is perfectly fine. The joy is not in creating a picture-perfect fall afternoon. The joy is in making room for the people we love and giving ourselves permission to enjoy the little things while they are here.

Perhaps, years from now, our children will remember that there was a season when the apples appeared in the kitchen, the cider was warming on the stove, and someone said, Come sit down. We are having an apple afternoon!
