Seasons

Preparing Your Home for Seasonal Transition

At the end of summer, days are still warm, the children may still be wearing shorts and sandals, and perhaps there are still glasses of lemonade appearing at the kitchen table. And yet, little by little, we begin to notice the first hints of a new season. The school year begins, the evenings seem to arrive a little earlier, and before long, we find ourselves thinking about apples, cinnamon, cozy blankets, and all the simple comforts of autumn.

I have always loved the gentle transition between seasons. There is no need to change everything overnight or rush straight from summer into pumpkins and sweaters. Instead, we can slowly begin making small changes around our homes and in our family rhythms, allowing our spaces to reflect the season that is gradually arriving.

Here are a few simple and joyful ways to prepare your home for the gentle transition from late summer into early fall.

Begin at the Front Door

One of the simplest places to welcome a new season is right at the front door.

During the summer, we have boxwood wreaths hanging on our doors. As autumn begins to approach, I love changing them for fall wreaths. It is a small change, but it immediately makes the house feel ready for the season ahead.

There is something cheerful about coming home and seeing that little hint of autumn waiting at the door.

You might choose a wreath with autumn leaves, wheat, berries, dried flowers, or something simple and natural. It does not have to be elaborate. Sometimes one small seasonal change is enough to make a home feel refreshed.

Change a Few Little Things Inside

There is no need to completely redecorate your home every time the seasons change. In fact, I think it can be especially lovely to simply change a few favorite things.

Perhaps you have a few decorative items on your dining table or kitchen counter that you enjoy changing with the seasons. Late summer flowers might slowly give way to a small bowl of apples, a pretty pumpkin or two, or a simple arrangement of autumn branches.

The idea is not to fill every available surface with decorations. A few thoughtful touches can make a home feel seasonal without making it feel cluttered.

Sometimes the smallest changes are the ones that bring the most delight.

Bring Out Cozier Pillows and Blankets

As the weather begins to cool, I love changing some of the lighter pillows on the sofa for ones with warmer colors and cozier textures.

Soft knits, velvety fabrics, warm plaids, and deeper autumn colors can make the living room feel especially inviting as we move toward the season of cozy evenings at home.

This is also a good time to put away the lightweight summer throw blankets and bring out something a little heavier and warmer.

There is something so comforting about having a cozy blanket waiting on the sofa, especially as the evenings grow cooler. It invites us to slow down, sit together, read a book, watch a family movie, or simply enjoy a quiet moment at the end of the day.

Let the Scents of the Season Begin to Drift In

Summer might smell like fresh flowers, citrus, or clean linen. Autumn brings its own wonderful collection of cozy scents.

This can be the time to begin lighting fall candles or using essential oils with warm, comforting fragrances. Cinnamon, orange, clove, vanilla, apple, and other autumn-inspired scents can make an ordinary afternoon feel a little more special.

You do not have to wait for the calendar to officially announce fall. If a cool morning arrives and you feel like lighting a candle while making breakfast, I think that is reason enough.

Sometimes creating a sense of season is simply about noticing what feels lovely in the moment.

Put Away Summer Books and Bring Out Fall Favorites

One of my favorite ways to welcome a new season is by changing the books we have sitting out for the children.

I love putting away some of our summer picture books and bringing out our favorite stories for autumn. There is something so special about opening a familiar book that we only read during a particular season.

A small basket of fall picture books in the living room or a stack of them beside a favorite chair can be such a simple way to bring the season into everyday life.

You might include stories about apples, pumpkins, changing leaves, harvest time, woodland animals, cozy homes, and all the little adventures that belong to autumn.

Seasonal books have a wonderful way of creating traditions. Years from now, children may see a particular cover and immediately remember cozy afternoons, warm blankets, and the feeling of being home together.

Begin Changing the Foods You Keep on Hand

The transition from summer to fall often begins in the kitchen.

During the hottest days of summer, we may naturally gravitate toward lighter meals, fresh salads, berries, watermelon, and cold drinks. As autumn approaches, I find myself beginning to think about warmer and cozier foods.

Maybe a pitcher of lemonade is occasionally replaced with apple cider. Perhaps we start bringing home more apples from the grocery store and keeping a little caramel dip on hand for an easy afternoon treat.

This is also the perfect time to begin baking some favorite fall foods.

Cinnamon apple muffins, apple crisp, pumpkin bread, warm oatmeal, and other simple seasonal treats can make an ordinary afternoon feel especially cozy.

The wonderful thing about seasonal food is that it does not have to be complicated. Sometimes simply slicing up a few apples and setting out a little caramel dip can feel like a celebration.

Make a Little List of Fall Things You Hope to Do

The beginning of a new season can also be a lovely time to think ahead.

You do not need to create a long list of activities or fill every weekend with plans. In fact, sometimes just choosing a few things your family would really enjoy can make the season feel more meaningful.

If you live near an apple orchard, perhaps you could plan an afternoon of apple picking. A pumpkin patch, a fall festival, a nature walk to look for changing leaves, or a visit to a local farmers market might also be something to look forward to.

Other simple autumn traditions might include:

  • Taking a family walk on the first cool evening
  • Making homemade apple cider or hot chocolate
  • Choosing a few pumpkins together
  • Having a family movie night with cozy blankets and popcorn
  • Baking a favorite fall recipe
  • Going on a nature walk and collecting colorful leaves
  • Reading a new chapter book together
  • Hosting a simple soup-and-bread dinner
  • Visiting a farmers market for apples, squash, and other seasonal foods
  • Having an afternoon devoted to making a fall craft together

The goal is not to do everything. It is simply to notice the season and choose a few things that will help your family enjoy it.

Let the Transition Be Gradual

Perhaps that is my favorite part of moving from summer into autumn: we do not have to rush.

The summer decorations do not all need to disappear in one afternoon. The weather may still be warm for weeks. There is plenty of time for sandals, late summer flowers, and one more glass of lemonade.

And at the same time, we can begin making room for what is coming next.

We can hang a fall wreath on the door. We can bring out a heavier blanket. We can place a few apples in a bowl on the kitchen counter and bake something with cinnamon. We can pull our favorite autumn books from the shelf and begin dreaming about an afternoon at the apple orchard.

Seasonal transitions do not have to be dramatic to be meaningful.

Sometimes they are simply a collection of small changes that remind us to pay attention, to the shifting light, the changing weather, the rhythms of our family, and the beauty of beginning again.

And perhaps that is one of the loveliest things about a new season.

It gives us another gentle invitation to pause, make our homes a little cozier, gather our families close, and enjoy the simple gifts waiting right where we are!
