The Little Drawer Beside Your Bed

“The smallest corners of a home often hold the sweetest treasures.”

There are some places in a home that no one else really notices.

A favorite kitchen spoon. The chair by the window. The basket beside the couch.

And then there’s the little drawer in your bedside table.

It isn’t a grand organizing project or something that will ever be featured in a magazine. In fact, most people will never open it. But for many mothers, that little drawer quietly becomes a place that holds the gentle rhythms of everyday life.

It’s where the day begins before the rest of the house wakes.

It’s where the day ends after little feet have stopped padding down the hallway.

It’s a tiny space that belongs just to you.

Over the years, I’ve realized that I don’t want this drawer to become a junk drawer. I want it to feel peaceful every time I open it, a little reminder that caring for myself doesn’t have to be extravagant. Sometimes it looks like having the things I reach for most close at hand.

Books for Different Moments

My bedside drawer almost always holds a few books.

There’s the novel I’m slowly working through, the kind I read a chapter or two of before drifting off to sleep.

There’s usually a devotional waiting for quiet mornings or peaceful evenings.

I also keep my one-sentence journal nearby. I love ending the day by capturing one small memory or one simple blessing. Looking back through those tiny entries reminds me how many ordinary days become extraordinary simply because we noticed them.

A Prayer List Close By

One of my favorite things to keep in my drawer is my nightly prayer list.

It’s nothing fancy, just a page filled with names, hopes, answered prayers, and things I’m trusting God with.

Having that list nearby reminds me that no day is too ordinary for hope and remembering blessings.

The Sweetest Treasures

If you opened my drawer, you might also find something that would mean very little to anyone else.

Tiny handwritten notes from my children.

Little hearts drawn in crayon.

A folded piece of notebook paper that says, “I love you, Mommy.”

The sweetest part is that my children know this drawer is where I keep them.

Every so often one of them will come into my room holding a freshly folded note.

“Here’s another one for your drawer.”

As if they’re adding another jewel to a treasure chest.

And honestly…

They are.

Those little papers are worth more than almost anything else I own!

Simple Comforts

I also like keeping a few practical comforts tucked away.

A favorite hand cream.

Cuticle cream.

Lip balm.

A small candle that I often light during our morning time or while I read in the evening.

Nothing expensive.

Just little things that help everyday routines feel a bit more intentional.

Practical Things You’ll Be Glad Are Nearby

Not everything has to be sentimental.

Sometimes the best bedside drawer is simply one that’s thoughtfully stocked.

You might enjoy keeping things like:

  • A coaster or two to protect your nightstand from tea, coffee, or water glasses.
  • A small box of tissues.
  • A bookmark or reading glasses.
  • A soft sleep mask or earplugs.
  • A favorite pen.
  • A small notebook for those middle-of-the-night ideas you’ll surely forget by morning.
  • A tiny tin of mints.
  • A small bottle of lavender linen or pillow spray.
  • A favorite family photograph.

The goal isn’t to fill the drawer. It’s to fill it thoughtfully.

A Tiny Reflection of Home

There’s something beautiful about creating cozy little corners.

Not because they’re perfect.

Not because anyone else will see them.

But because they quietly support the life we’re building every day.

A peaceful bedside drawer won’t change the world.

But it might make your mornings feel a little calmer.

Your evenings a little slower.

Your memories a little closer.

And perhaps years from now, when your children are grown, they’ll still remember that little drawer where Mommy kept all the notes they wrote.

Some treasures never lose their value.

They simply become part of the story of home!
