One of the greatest gifts we can give our children isn’t found in a toy store or wrapped up with a bow. It’s the gift of our time.
Strong families don’t usually happen by accident. They grow closer through countless ordinary moments shared together, laughing around the dinner table, reading books aloud, playing games, watching movies, or simply enjoying one another’s company. These simple traditions become the memories our children carry with them for the rest of their lives.
If your hope is to build a family that grows closer over the years rather than slowly drifting apart, it’s important to be intentional about making time for one another.
Put Family Time on the Calendar
One of the best ways to protect your family time is to schedule it just like any other important appointment.
Plan regular pizza nights, family game nights, movie nights, or special outings. Write them on your calendar and treat them as priorities rather than squeezing them in only if there’s extra time.
Stephen Covey famously talked about putting the “big rocks” into your schedule first. If family is one of your biggest priorities, your calendar should reflect that.
Sometimes it’s helpful to honestly ask ourselves: If someone looked at my planner, would they know that my family is one of my greatest priorities?
There isn’t a right or wrong answer, life goes through busy seasons, but if family relationships are important to us, they deserve intentional time.
Put Away the Devices
One of the simplest ways to make your family feel loved is to give them your full attention.
Phones, tablets, and televisions constantly compete for our attention. If we’re always looking at a screen, our children quietly learn that every notification is more important than they are.
Our family has found a simple solution. We keep a designated drawer in our kitchen where everyone’s devices go during family time.
My husband needs to stay available for work, so he leaves his phone’s ringer on. Instead of carrying it with him constantly, he simply walks over to the drawer if he hears a message come through. That small change allows him to stay reachable without letting his phone interrupt every conversation.
Creating little boundaries like this helps everyone be more present.
Create Comfortable Gathering Spaces
Family traditions become even more enjoyable when your home has welcoming places to gather.
Our favorite spot is a small table just off the kitchen where we play board games together. Some families enjoy gathering around the coffee table in the living room. Others may have a dining room table that’s perfect for puzzles or crafts.
Movie nights become even cozier with soft blankets, fluffy pillows, and everyone piled together on the couch.
The goal isn’t a perfectly decorated home, it’s creating spaces where your family naturally wants to spend time together.
Make Your Home Feel Warm and Inviting
The atmosphere of your home matters.
Simple touches can make family time feel even more peaceful and memorable.
I enjoy lighting a candle in many of our rooms because it creates such a calm, welcoming environment. We also love playing classical music softly in the background while we’re reading, playing games, or working on projects together. Instrumental music creates a peaceful atmosphere without competing with conversation.
If you’re planning a family game night, consider serving simple, non-messy snacks that everyone can enjoy without worrying about sticky fingers on the game pieces. Fresh fruit, popcorn, pretzels, crackers, cheese cubes, or homemade trail mix all make easy choices.
Sometimes the smallest details help ordinary evenings feel a little more special.
Start a Family Book Club
One of our favorite family traditions has become our family book club.
Each weekday evening we gather together and read one chapter of a book aloud. Sometimes my husband reads, sometimes I read, and as our children have gotten older, they enjoy taking turns reading chapters too.
Reading together has led to wonderful conversations, inside jokes, and so many shared memories.
When we finish a book, we celebrate with a simple tea party. We might make a treat inspired by the story, enjoy a special dessert, and ask fun questions about our favorite characters or moments.
The children love helping plan these little celebrations, from preparing snacks to decorating the table.
Books have a beautiful way of bringing families together.
Let Your Children Help
Children enjoy family traditions even more when they help create them.
Invite them to choose the board game for game night, help prepare snacks, pick the movie, choose the next family read-aloud, or decorate for a themed evening.
When children contribute, they feel ownership, and those traditions become even more meaningful.
Often it’s not the activity itself they remember most, it’s that they were included.
Welcome Others Into Your Home
While our family mostly focuses on spending time together and with our extended family, opening your home to others can also be a wonderful way to build community.
If entertaining feels overwhelming, remember that it doesn’t have to be elaborate.
Invite one family over for pizza, soup, or sandwiches. Light a candle, put on some soft background music, and enjoy visiting while the children play together.
One of the easiest ways to host is with a potluck meal. Years ago, when we regularly invited other couples over, I would prepare the main dish and ask each guest to bring a side or dessert. It kept the work manageable and allowed everyone to contribute.
If hosting isn’t your favorite thing, that’s perfectly okay too. Hospitality doesn’t require perfection. People remember feeling welcomed far more than they remember matching dishes or elaborate centerpieces.
It’s the Little Moments That Matter
When we picture a joyful family life, we often imagine big vacations and milestone celebrations.
But in reality, family is built during ordinary Tuesday evenings.
It’s built while reading one more chapter before bed.
It’s built around pizza on game night.
It’s built while laughing over a board game, sharing popcorn during a movie, listening to music while baking, or talking around the kitchen table.
These small moments may seem ordinary today, but one day they’ll become the memories your children treasure most.
As parents, we have the beautiful opportunity to create a home where everyone feels welcomed, known, and loved, a place where family naturally gathers because it’s filled with warmth, laughter, and genuine connection.
Those simple moments of togetherness are what truly create a joyful family life!
